Publishing and files

What is in your download

Every file you need, in one zip.

Click Download for KDP and you get one zip file. Inside:

  • interior-print-ready.pdf — the inside of your book, properly typeset with page numbers, chapter openings and correct margins. This is the file you upload to Amazon for the paperback.
  • An editable Word file (.docx) — the same book, but you can change it. Opens in Word, Google Docs or Pages.
  • An EPUB file — the ebook, for Kindle and every other reader.
  • cover-wrap-print-ready.pdf — the full paperback cover: back, spine and front on one page, sized to your book's exact page count.
  • ebook-cover.jpg — the Kindle cover: your front cover at 1600 × 2560, the size Amazon asks for.
  • preflight-report.txt — proof your files match what printers require.
  • kdp-upload-paperback.txt and kdp-upload-ebook.txt — numbered steps for uploading, with your details already filled in.
  • metadata-sheet.txt — your book description, keywords and categories, ready to paste.
  • manuscript.md — the plain text, if you want it.
  • images/ — your cover as it was made, and any other artwork.

Which file do I actually upload?

For a paperback: interior-print-ready.pdf for the inside, and cover-wrap-print-ready.pdf for the cover — under Upload a cover you already have.

For a Kindle ebook: the EPUB for the inside, and ebook-cover.jpg for the cover — again under Upload a cover you already have.

The two checklist files walk you through both.

Changed something after downloading?

Download again. If anything in the book changed since your last download — a rewrite, a new author name, a different cover — the package is rebuilt with it first, which takes a minute or two. If nothing changed, you get the same file straight away. Downloading is always free.
